If you are looking for a dentist in Taipei—whether you are new to the city, an international family, or simply searching for a clinic that offers more time, clarity, and care—your first dental visit can feel uncertain. At Longwood Dental Clinic, we believe that dentistry should feel calm, transparent, and collaborative, not rushed or intimidating.

This guide explains exactly what happens during a first dental visit at Longwood, so you can feel prepared, comfortable, and confident before you book.

Why Your First Dental Visit Matters

A proper first appointment is more than a quick check. It is the foundation of your long-term oral health. Many patients who come to us have previously experienced short, transactional appointments elsewhere. Our approach is different: we prioritize listening, education, and thoughtful diagnosis before discussing treatment.

A comprehensive first visit allows us to:

  • Understand your concerns, symptoms, and goals

  • Review your dental and medical history carefully

  • Identify early issues before they become complex problems

  • Build a personalized, long-term care plan

What Happens During Your First Visit at Longwood Dental

1. Warm Welcome and Unhurried Check-in

From the moment you arrive, our front desk team will guide you through the process in clear English or Mandarin. Appointments are scheduled with sufficient time, so you will not feel rushed through paperwork or conversation.

If you are an international patient, we can also help with:

  • English communication throughout your visit

  • Understanding treatment options clearly

  • Providing documentation for private insurance reimbursement

2. Detailed Conversation With Your Dentist

Your appointment begins with a real conversation, not a procedure.

Your dentist will take time to ask about:

  • Your current concerns (pain, sensitivity, cosmetic goals, etc.)

  • Past dental experiences

  • Medical history and medications

  • Lifestyle factors (grinding, stress, diet/habits, sleep, etc.)

This step is essential. It allows us to treat you as a whole person, not just teeth.

3. Digital X-rays and Diagnostic Imaging

We recommend digital X-rays to check for areas that are not visible during a visual exam, such as:

  • Early cavities between teeth

  • Bone health around teeth

  • Infections at the root

  • Wisdom teeth position

We only take low-dose X-rays and will explain why they are recommended.

4. Comprehensive Oral Examination

A thorough clinical examination typically includes:

  • Teeth and gum health assessment

  • Bite and jaw function evaluation

  • Evaluation and full records of existing fillings, crowns, or implants

  • Assessment of wear from clenching or grinding

We explain what we see as we go, using plain language rather than technical jargon, so you always understand what is happening.

5. Clear Explanation of Findings

One of the most common things our patients tell us is:

“This is the first time a dentist really explained everything this clearly.”

After the examination, your dentist will:

  • Review findings with you visually (often using images)

  • Explain which issues are urgent vs. which can wait and be monitored

  • Answer all your questions thoroughly

  • Discuss different treatment options if needed

There is no pressure to proceed immediately. Our goal is understanding first, decisions second.

6. Personalised Treatment Plan (If Treatment Is Needed)

If treatment is recommended, you will receive:

  • A tailored plan based on your priorities

  • Explanation of benefits and alternatives

  • Estimated timelines

  • Transparent discussion of fees

We believe patients should feel fully informed and comfortable before agreeing to any treatment.

Common Questions Patients Ask Before Their First Dental Visit in Taipei

Q: Is the first dental visit painful?

A: No. A first visit is primarily focused on examination, discussion, and diagnosis. Procedures are only done if clearly needed and with your consent, and often with local anesthesia to ensure minimal discomfort.

Q: How long does a first dental appointment take?

A: Typically 45–60 minutes. We intentionally allocate more time than many clinics so you never feel rushed.

Q: Do you speak English fluently at Longwood Dental?

A: Yes. Our dentists and staff communicate fluently in English and regularly treat international patients and their families.

Q: Can I just come for a consultation without committing to treatment?

A: Absolutely. Many patients book a first visit specifically for a second opinion or consultation.

Q: How much does a dental checkup cost in Taipei?

A: Costs vary depending on examination, imaging, and whether cleaning is included. We always explain fees transparently before proceeding with any additional procedures.

For all new patients, we generally recommend a comprehensive checkup & cleaning package which includes all necessary X-rays, full mouth exam & records with cleaning & fluoride treatment. Your doctor will discuss with you your dental conditions, if any treatments are needed and what the costs are. The appointment will take ~1 hour and the fee is NTD 3,500.

For new patients looking for a checkup only, we recommend an initial exam and consultation first, which will include a full examination and necessary x-rays. Your doctor will also discuss with you your dental conditions, treatment options and costs. You can decide after your consultation whether you would like to proceed with the treatment. The exam & consultation will take ~45 minutes and the fee is Ntd 2,000.

Q: Can you help with private dental insurance claims?

A: Yes. We regularly support patients using international private insurance and can provide relevant documentation in English for reimbursement.

Why Many International Families and Professionals Choose Longwood Dental

Patients often come to us after trying multiple clinics and feeling unsatisfied. They choose Longwood because they value:

  • Unhurried appointments with real listening

  • Clear communication in English

  • Evidence-based dentistry, careful diagnosis, and thorough treatment

  • Respectful, patient-centred decision making

  • A calm, discreet clinical environment

  • Continuity of long-term care

Our philosophy is simple: treat every patient the way we would want our own family members treated.

When Should You Book Your First Dental Visit?

You should consider booking a first visit if:

  • You have not had a dental checkup in over 6–12 months

  • You recently moved to Taipei

  • You experience sensitivity, pain, bleeding gums, or jaw discomfort

  • You want a second opinion before a dental treatment

  • You are looking for a long-term dentist you can trust

  • You are dissatisfied with your current teeth

Preventive visits often save significant time, cost, and discomfort later.

Book Your First Appointment With Confidence

We understand that choosing a dentist is personal. If you are looking for a dental clinic in Taipei that prioritizes clarity, warmth, and clinical excellence, we would be honoured to care for you and your family. You can book your appointment online or contact our team directly with any questions.
